You don’t need a perfect home for beautiful family photos.
If you’ve ever thought, “I’d love family photos, but our home just isn’t photogenic enough,” - you’re not alone.
I hear this often from mums who reach out to me. They’re craving beautiful photos of their family, captured in a meaningful, relaxed way… but feel hesitant because their home doesn’t look like a Pinterest board.
Let me tell you something with absolute confidence: you don’t need a picture perfect home for beautiful, heartfelt family photography.
In fact, some of the most touching sessions I’ve ever photographed have taken place in small homes, messy homes, rented homes, and homes mid reno. Why? Because your home isn’t the backdrop, it’s the heartbeat of your family’s story.

What makes a home “photo worthy”? (Hint: it’s not your furniture)
It’s easy to think your home needs to be styled within an inch of its life to be photo ready. But when I walk into your space, I’m not looking for design perfection. I’m looking for light, connection and truth.
Some of the most beautiful things I see in family homes include:
• The soft light coming through your bedroom window.
• The well loved couch where your toddler climbs into your lap.
• The little everyday mess that shows a life well lived. A trail of blocks, a favourite blanket, a storybook left open.
These are the details that make your home yours. And when captured with care, they become part of your family’s visual legacy.
Why in-home sessions mean more.
For many of the families I work with in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs, home is where so much love happens. The kind of love that’s quiet, unfiltered and often invisible in the rush of everyday life.
That’s why in-home family photography is so powerful. It’s about:
• Your baby’s nursery before they grow out of the cot.
• The kitchen where you make school lunches while they tug at your leg.
• The hallway they charge down in their pyjamas every morning.
It’s about preserving this season, exactly as it is, before it quietly shifts into the next one.

But… what if my house is dark / small / cluttered?
This is probably the most common worry I hear. So let’s break it down:
🕯️ Dark? I’m trained to find and work with natural light, even in tricky spaces. A single window and a light coloured wall can be magic.
🏠 Small? That’s okay. I’ve photographed entire sessions in one or two rooms. It’s not about how much space you have, it’s what we do with it.
🧸 Cluttered? You live here! You’ve got kids! That’s the point. If there are a few areas you want to tidy, I can gently guide you. But the goal isn’t to hide your life, it’s to celebrate it.
Real connection matters more than curated perfection
Your children don’t care what your floors look like. One day, they’ll look back at your family photos and notice the way you held them. The freckles on your arms. The favourite cup you always had your tea in. The shelves stacked with the books they now read to their own kids.
This is what lasts. This is what in-home photography captures. And it’s why your house, just as it is right now - is perfect.
A few ways to prepare (without stress)
If you still want to do a little prep before your session, here are a few quick, low effort ideas:
• Open your curtains and blinds to let in natural light.
• Tidy one or two key areas (like the master bed or lounge).
• Don’t worry about the rest - truly.
You don’t need to deep clean. You don’t need to redecorate. You just need to show up with your people, in the place you call home.

Let’s document the beauty that already lives in your home
As a Melbourne in-home photographer, I’ve had the honour of capturing families in all kinds of homes and the most meaningful images are never about the space. They’re about the love inside it.
So if you’ve been holding back because you think your home isn’t good enough, this is your invitation to let that go. You deserve to be in the frame. Your children deserve to remember what home felt like.
Let’s celebrate the perfectly imperfect beauty of your everyday life, in the place that holds your memories.
