What to expect during an in-home Photography session (and why your kids will love it)

So, you’ve booked an in-home photography session (yay!) or maybe you’re still on the fence because you’re picturing total chaos, uncooperative children, and wondering if your home is “photo worthy.” Sound familiar?

Here’s the truth: it’s all going to be fine. Better than fine, actually. In-home sessions are relaxed, beautiful, and fun; even when the dog sits on someone’s head or your toddler insists on showing me every single toy they own (true story).

Let’s walk through what you can actually expect, and why this type of session just works.

You Don’t Have to Clean the Whole House

Seriously. Read that again.

I’m not coming over to inspect your skirting boards. I’m looking for good light and honest moments, not Pinterest perfection. We’ll tidy a few spots if we need to (I’ll even help move things around if that makes it easier), but lived in homes are what I love. If there’s a laundry basket off to the side? That’s real life. And that’s beautiful.

Your Kids Can Just Be Themselves

In-home sessions are magical for kids because they’re in their safe space. They’re not being bribed to smile at a stranger in a park while wearing itchy clothes. At home, they’re surrounded by their toys, pets, books, little treasures and all the things that make them them.

And if they want to show me their LEGO collection or jump on the bed for a few minutes? We go with it. Those spontaneous moments often make the best photos. I can honestly say, I’ve never met a child who 1: doesn’t like me and 2: I haven’t been able to photograph.

It’s About Connection, Not Perfection

You don’t need to pose stiffly or smile on cue. I’ll gently guide you with simple prompts to help you feel natural. Like cuddling on the couch, playing with your kids on the floor, or holding your newborn in that chair you always sit in.

We’re not aiming for “picture perfect.” We’re aiming for real, and real is where the magic lives.

A gentle prompt led to this beautiful moment.

Sessions Are Relaxed and Unrushed

Most in-home sessions take around 90 minutes. We work with your family’s rhythm, whether that means giving the baby a quick feed, changing a nappy, or pausing for a toddler snack break (no judgment; I’m always pro-snack and sometimes snacks make very cute photos).

You’re not on a tight timeline, and there’s room for things to unfold naturally.

You’ll Actually Enjoy It

Yes, really. Most families tell me afterwards how surprised they were by how enjoyable and stress free the session felt (even the Dads - I know right). You’re in your own space, surrounded by the people you love, doing what you already do every day. Just with me quietly documenting the beauty of it.

You don’t need a big backyard, a perfect outfit, or perfectly behaved kids. You just need to show up as you are, because that’s more than enough.
