5 reasons parents think they can't do an in-home photoshoot (and why they're wrong)
All smiles while playing on the parents bed.
Every week, I chat with parents who absolutely love the idea of an in-home family photo session.
Then the objections start rolling in.
"My house is too messy."
"My kids won't cooperate."
"I hate having my photo taken."
As a family photographer in Melbourne, I've heard them all. The funny thing is, the things parents worry about most are almost never the things that affect their photos.
So let's bust some myths.
1. "My House Isn't Tidy Enough"
Let me guess.
There's washing on the couch. Toys on the floor. A collection of drink bottles scattered throughout the house and last nights dinner scraps still under the dining table.
Sound familiar?
The good news is that I don't need your entire home to be spotless or deep cleaned. I only need a few small areas with good light.
Before your session, I can let you know which spaces are likely to work best, and a quick tidy of those areas is usually plenty.
I've photographed families with baskets of laundry hidden just outside the frame and toys piled up in the next room. You'd never know from the final images.
Your family photos aren't about showing off a perfectly clean house.
They're about showing off the people who live in it.
Stacks on.
2. "My home isn't Pinterest-worthy"
This one breaks my heart a little.
Somewhere along the way, social media convinced parents that their homes need to look like a display home before they're worthy of being photographed.
That's simply not true.
The most important thing about your home isn't the furniture, the paint colour, or the styling.
It's the memories being made there.
Years from now, your children won't care whether your kitchen was renovated or whether your nursery matched a Pinterest board.
They'll love seeing the home where they built cubby houses, read bedtime stories, and snuggled on the couch with their favourite people.
Those memories matter far more than perfect décor.
3. "My baby or kids won't cooperate"
Can I tell you a secret?
I don't expect them to, nor do I want them to.
Children aren't supposed to sit still and smile on command.
Babies cry.
Toddlers run away.
Preschoolers make fart jokes.
Older kids decide they're too cool for photos.
It's all completely normal.
My sessions aren't about forcing children into perfect poses. They're about capturing genuine connection and personality.
Some of my favourite photographs have come from moments parents thought were disasters at the time.
The giggles. The cuddles. The chaos. The wonderfully imperfect moments that make your family yours.
A lot of movement during sessions.
4. "My house is too dark"
This is one of the most common concerns I hear.
Parents often apologise before I've even stepped through the front door.
"Sorry, our house is really dark."
The thing is, finding beautiful light is literally my job.
Most homes have pockets of gorgeous natural light, even if they don't feel bright to you - because every home has windows!
Over the years, I've photographed families in apartments, townhouses, older homes, weatherboards, and everything in between.
You don't need floor-to-ceiling windows or a sun-drenched living room.
You just need a photographer who knows where to look. Plus we also have the benefit of using your front/back/side yard, which in most session we do actually venture outside if it’s not raining.
5. "I'm not photogenic"
Honestly? Neither are most of my clients. At least, that's what they tell me before their session.
The truth is that being photogenic isn't something you're born with.
Most people feel awkward when a camera is pointed at them.
Most people worry about their smile, their weight, their hair, or what they're doing with their hands.
That's normal.
My job isn't to make you pose like a model.
My job is to help you relax, connect with your family, and forget about the camera altogether.
The photographs your children treasure one day won't be the ones where you looked perfect.
They'll be the ones where they can see you laughing, cuddling, playing, and loving them.
Quiet hugs on the couch.
The Perfect Family Doesn't Exist
And thank goodness for that.
The families you see on my website aren't perfectly behaved.
Their homes aren't perfectly clean.
And they didn't have me arrive at their session feeling completely confident.
They're real families, just like yours.
The magic of in-home family photography isn't perfection, it's capturing your family exactly as you are right now.
Messy house.
Wild kids.
Laundry baskets and all.
One day, those ordinary moments will be the ones you miss the most.
